Does a water purifier enhance the taste of water?

water purifier

One of the most common properties of water is that it is tasteless. However, you must have noticed water from different sources tastes differently. Why is that? Different sources of water have different amounts of dissolved salts and other particles that affect the taste of water. It is important to note that taste is not a good indicator of the purity of the water. Moreover, there are other components in the water that affects its taste. If you don’t like the taste of water at your home, the reason could be the quality of the water. The taste of your water can be enhanced with water purifiers. How does a water purifier enhance the taste of the water? To understand this, we need to know what affects the taste of water.

What are the factors that affect the taste of your drinking water?

Mainly, the presence of dissolved solids and minerals in variable amounts gives water a particular flavour and taste. The source of the water, the pH, and the TDS levels are the elements that affect how the water tastes. Let’s examine some of these elements in greater detail:

pH

Depending on how acidic or basic your water tastes, the pH level of your water may be a determining factor. According to World Health Organisation (WHO), drinking water between the range of 6.5 to 8.5 pH is safe for human consumption. The water with the appropriate pH value indicates that water is neutral in taste and is not harmful for drinking purposes. If the water is higher or lower than the suggested level, the water can be too acidic or basic in nature. Exposure to extreme pH levels can be harmful to humans, as it can lead to skin disorders, irritation and gastric issues. WHO warns against the consumption of water with extreme pH levels. If you want to check the pH level of your water, a mechanical device or a water specialist can be used to rule out the pH level of the water.

Source of water

Groundwater, surface water, tank water and borewell water are some of the most common sources of water that we have. Based of where the water comes from, the taste can differ. The water can taste sweet or salty depending on its origin. If your source of water is lakes and rivers, the water can be saltier in taste. This happens due to the abundance of salts and minerals present in the water. Salts and minerals like sodium, chlorine, magnesium and calcium can cause the water to taste saltier. In contrast to that, water collected from underground can have a chalky taste. This is because of the limestones and rocks that are present in the groundwater reserves.

TDS

The TDS level of water is indicated by the total amount of dissolved solids in the water. These dissolved minerals and salts can be both organic and inorganic in nature. Calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, carbonates, hydrogen carbonate, chloride, sulfate, and nitrates are some of the solids particles that are readily available in the water source. According to the WHO, dissolved solids levels below 300 ppm are considered acceptable for human consumption and may modify the taste of the water. Drinking water may have a bland taste at extremely low concentrations of these dissolved particles, but at large concentrations, the taste may become too salty.

How does a water purifier affect the taste of water?

An RO water purifier makes the water taste palatable by removing the dissolved salts, minerals, and germs from the water. However, as discussed above if the salts are removed in excess, the water can taste bland and tasteless. This is the reason why most RO water purifiers come with minerals to compensate for the loss of minerals and salt in the water.

The taste of your drinking water is also affected when your water purification system has a fault or failure. If the water purifier is broken and can’t remove the heavy salts and dissolved particles in the water, then the water can taste very salty.
