Have you ever lay in bed awake trying to get some shut eye? Has tea/coffee ever messed up your sleep cycle? Or work stress kept you up, leaving you tired the next day? Mostly everyone can relate to a few nights a month where you just can’t sleep no matter how hard you try. In these situations, you start feeling hungry and wanting a midnight snack; And then, at the back of your head, you hear a small voice telling you that it’s not good to munch on something so late. It leads to weight gain, bloating, acidity etc.
Well, the next time you are in this position, there are some foods that can help in inducing better sleep. Having the right snacks can be healthy and sleep inducing.
1. Figs –
Figs contain nutrients that help with sleeping disorders. It also helps with blood flow and muscle contraction which is helpful in falling asleep. Bonus: Have it with milk and notice the effects double over time. Have it with a glass of milk before going to bed and sleep peacefully
2. White rice –
White rice might have lower nutrients than brown rice, but it does have a high glycemic index. Whenever you eat rice for lunch, have you noticed you start feeling sleepy right after? This is because foods with high glycemic acid like rice, have a longer sleep duration than normal
3. Chamomile tea –
Also known as “Sleepy tea”. It is a herbal tea which is made from a plant that promotes sleep due to its sedative effects. A warm comforting cup of tea before bed might just what you need to drift away
4. Milk –
Certain compounds in milk — specifically tryptophan and melatonin — may help you fall asleep. Tryptophan, an amino acid, plays an important role in the production of the neurotransmitter known as serotonin. Serotonin can help cultivate relaxation, relieve anxiety, and facilitate a more restful night’s sleep.
5. Almonds –
While almonds are a great source of nutrients, they are also a source of the hormone melatonin. Melatonin regulates your internal clock and signals your body to prepare for sleep.
People who suffer from acid refluxes are also advised to refrain from eating late at night. However, we all do feel hungry and get midnight hunger pangs which get difficult to ignore. Eating the right food before bed is perfectly normal and sometimes even beneficial. Avoid eating junk food which can lead to weight gain and also interfere with sleep.
